Compressed heat dryers often encounter several issues. A common problem is the refrigeration system malfunction. This might be due to a clogged expansion valve, indicated by a lack of flow in the sight glass, icing/frosting at the expansion valve outlet, and a hot high-pressure pipe or high-pressure trip. Causes include dirt, ice, or a broken temperature-sensitive capillary tube. To address this, adjust the expansion valve superheat; increase the temperature-sensitive superheat and Ps pressure; increase the high-pressure; and close the hot gas bypass valve to flush out blockages.
It's important to note that during system blockages, high and low-pressure values may be within the normal range during no-load operation; however, high pressure may become significantly elevated or even trip the high-pressure switch under load. Another common issue is compressor failure due to motor burnout, liquid hammer, or other mechanical problems. To diagnose this, measure the motor resistance; check the compressor's capacitor; and use a multimeter (200MΩ or higher) to test the capacitor. Note that the reading will initially be low and then slowly increase, with larger capacitors taking longer. A reading of 0 or ∞ indicates leakage or breakdown.
